Frequently asked question

What is a certified copy?

Short answer

A photocopy that the notary compares with the original and certifies as a true copy. Banks, universities and Paraguay's immigration office (Migraciones) ask for them. You need to bring the original document.

How it is done

You bring the original document. The notary compares it with the photocopy, page by page, and certifies with her signature and seal that the copy is true to the original. The original goes back with you.

Who asks for it

  • Paraguay's immigration office (Dirección General de Migraciones), for residency applications.
  • Banks and finance companies, to open accounts or apply for loans.
  • Universities and schools, for enrollment and recognition of studies.
  • Companies and government agencies, in tenders and registrations.

What it does not certify

It certifies that the copy matches the original, not that the original is authentic or that its content is true. If the document comes from abroad, to be used in Paraguay it must be apostilled and, if it is not in Spanish, translated by a public translator (traductor público).
